The Grassmarket Hotel

On the Grassmarket at 94–96, in the Old Town, a couple of minutes from Victoria Street and the castle. The honest detail is one the hotel publishes itself: the rooms are small, and it gives the numbers — a single of 8.3 m², a "Snug" double of 9 m², a twin or double of 13 m², a triple of 20 m² and a quadruple of 21 m². Those figures tell you more than any score would. If you are arriving late and leaving at dawn on a tour coach, the position earns its keep; if you picture a slow morning with two suitcases open on the floor, book elsewhere.

Best for: Travellers who put the address ahead of the floor space, for a short night before an early departure.

In the Old Town of Edinburgh, the departure city for six of our eight tours.

Good to know
  • Six of our eight tours depart from Edinburgh, including all six multi-day itineraries. The cheapest three-day tour, from £180, explicitly does not include accommodation — that is the night this page exists for.
  • Edinburgh airport handled 15.8 million terminal passengers in 2024, up 10% on the previous year, and lists over 150 destinations and 36 airlines. Glasgow handled 8.1 million. The route list changes with the season, so check your own before counting on it.
  • You cannot reach Skye directly from Edinburgh on public transport: neither Citylink timetable serving the island runs through from Edinburgh, so it means at least two vehicles, via Glasgow or via Inverness. No official road distance or driving time between Edinburgh and Portree is published either, and you will not find one invented here.
